The Recreation Department offers several programs with the objective of facilitating participant learning and skills development. These programs include instruction and guidance provided by knowledgeable and experienced instructors.

The Recreation Department has an extensive portfolio of programs, activities and events organized into the following categories:

Youth After School Karate


This program provides youth participants with experienced instruction in learning the physical aspects of martial arts along with development of discipline, focus and respect for others.The emphasis on personal achievement also builds confidence: success is within the reach of every participant. Unlike team sports, there are no “benchwarmers” in karate classes. Instead, children learn techniques at their own pace.

Youth Learn to Ice Skate


This program is designed for children and adults who are interested in learning how to ice skate or who are interested in improving their skating technique. Come join in the fun!

Recreation Programs Youth Learn to Skate

Youth Art Class


For youth ages 6 through 12. Fine Art Class with acrylic painting: Learn the color wheel and beginner techniques in acrylic painting. Fee includes all supplies and each child will go home with an acrylic painting.

Lifeguard Training


The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.


Class Prerequisites

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Introduction to Vinyasa Yoga


Vinyasa yoga is a popular form of yoga as it is a fast-paced activity, almost reminiscent of a synchronized dance. This program is for beginners and will help you learn the foundation of Vinyasa Flow Yoga, linking the movements with your breathing.

Introduction to Tennis


Introduce your child to the game of tennis, this program provides participants with a fundamental understanding of the game while getting them out on the court right away. Everyone should be ready for fun with both games and drills!  Racquets are provided for those who do not have their own.  Please wear gym shoes.

Painting with Acrylics


This class welcomes participants to the world of acrylic painting, an art world full of versatility and bright, bold colors. Because acrylics are water based, it offers opacity (meaning you can paint right over your mistakes) that makes this medium especially appealing to beginners. On the other hand, experienced artists can take full advantage of the unique properties that acrylics offer and push the boundaries beyond their current artistic capabilities.

One Stroke Painting


This program utilizes a "one-stroke" painting technique that consists of loading a brush with two separate colors, allowing you to achieve the shading and highlighting in one painting stroke.

Learn to Play the Ukelele


This program is designed for beginner players. Participants will learn the basics of the Ukulele: holding the instrument, hand position, parts of the instrument, and how to tune. Each week there will be new songs learn and play.

Investing for Retirement


This program is intended to help interested individuals learn about the many ways to save for retirement as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each.  You will discover how to save money on taxes, manage investment risks and protect your assets from potential long-term health care expenses.  This program addresses financial issues that pertain to the self-employed as well as employees of corporations and government agencies.  This program is designed to teach you how to build wealth and align your money with your values to accomplish your goals in life.

Financial Managment


Successful financial planning is critical to reaching your financial goals. This program reviews the process of financial planning and gives you the tools to refine and upgrade your existing financial plan. We'll discuss wealth management and investments, retirement strategies, asset allocation models, estate planning, and risk management.

Defensive Driving


This course is a comprehensive driver improvement program offering practical knowledge to avoid crashes with defensive driving techniques. Emphasis is placed on the application of safe, responsible and lawful driving behaviors. This course satisfies the mandatory traffic class for participants with traffic violations.
